This past Friday, Monkey underwent his special little surgery, and the experience was hard. I knew that it was in his best interest, like it is for all domesticated animals, but I didn't think it would be so heart-wrenching; and the weather that day didn't make the experience any better. If you live in or near Atlanta, you knew how bad the weather was; torrential down-pours, lightening that made the hair on your arms stand up, and thunder that sounded like semi-trucks crashing into each other at ninety miles per hour was how the day started. I packed up my little boy and drove him out to the area where the doctor was set up, listening to his sad whimpering through the whole trip; you'd have thought Monkey knew what was going to happen once we got there! Then, after the technician was finished explaining how the day was to work, I was told to leave him underneath the awing and someone inside would come out to get him. My heart was in agony for the little guy! He has never been a fan of the outdoors and now I was supposed to leave him outside, on the wet pavement, in the pouring rain, thunder, and lightening!? Luckily, I had put him right at the front and he was the first crate taken in.
When Monkey got home, the hilarity ensued! I figured the anesthesia would make him drowsy and just a little tipsy, but I was wrong! Monkey couldn't keep still or walk straight and he would not lie down; he looked like a frat boy that had one too many drinks. Whenever Kitty or Savannah would go into the litter box, he'd barrel in there and do nothing but move the litter around, forcing the girls out. He also decided to pick a fight with the water in the water bowl! Monkey would use his paw to pull the bowl closer to him, causing some of the water to splash out and get him wet. Well, he didn't like that and decided to use his other paw to attack the water! I was prepared and got some of this on video:
Now, Monkey is back to normal and is just as snuggly as ever! That cat genuinely loves to be near Mister and me; and what's really nice is Savannah is starting to snuggle too! Both have taken a liking to Mister's feet and the husband pillow we keep on the floor in the living room.
The two of them have become like "peas and carrots;" especially, when getting into mischief!
The really interesting thing about watching these kittens grow up is seeing the differences in the way they play. I think I've mentioned before how loud Savannah growls when she's busy eviscerating a mouse, while Monkey just throws it around. I also noticed that Savannah likes her privacy when playing with prey. For example, I'm currently working on a crocheted doily that requires me to string beads onto the thread; since thread and string all ready enticed the kittens, the beads just added to their pleasure. Despite the beads being attached and the string in my hand, Savannah always insists on trying to drag the string of beads away. On the other hand, Monkey just bats and plays with the beads wherever they land!
On a completely different note, the paint box that I mentioned in my last post (ribbon decoupage kitty litter bucket) is finished! Here's the end result:
Doesn't Monkey look like a bear rug in that top left picture?! He loves to spread out like that anywhere in the house. He's also started to curl up with his sister.

That is the only word that could describe this past week. It all started last Thursday when my brother and grandparents came for a visit; the whole week leading up to then, we spent cleaning the house, doing laundry, and giving cats baths all for this very moment. My grandparents were one of the first guests to stay in the house when we bought it and my brother had never seen it. I'd like to think Mister and I have taken the time since my grandparents first visit to add our own little flare and coziness to the house. I was also really nervous that someone would get really bored, which for company is never good.

Turned out I had nothing to worry about! We spent most of Friday and Saturday "garage-sale"-ing; I found a bunch listed on Craigslist in the area and a few random ones, and boy did we find some amazing stuff! For instance, at one estate sale the homeowners were trying to unload an actual Mellow Mushroom sign! Neither of them could remember how or who they got it from, too; I guess it just appeared one morning!
They also had a really cute table and chairs set that Mister and I picked up for the back porch, and my bro got a leather jacket!
The table could use some work, but for $20 I wasn't turning it down!

Friday afternoon and into the early evening, My grandparents, brother and I decided to check out the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I have lived in Georgia now for four years, and didn't know Atlanta had a botanical garden until that horrific walkway collapse back in December; needless to say, I had my reservations. But once inside the orchid house, those feelings of doubt were blow through the glass roof!
I was so inspired by all the colors that everything at home was more beautiful then ever! It was like a fog was lifted from my mind's eye and everything became potential for artwork! We got an some amazing origami roses from one of Mister's friend that came alive for me! I set up a scene in the bonus room and painted my little heart out!
This was the first time in a very long time I did a still life scene like this. My roses turned out a little abstract, but the candlestick holders were brilliant!

After such an amazing session, I wanted to go back to the gardens to paint the orchids, but realized that my art supplies bucket wasn't appropriate. Up until now, I've been keeping my paints, canvases, brushes and other supplies in an empty kitty litter box (yeah I know...).
I had the idea to decoupage the box with pictures of my other paintings to make it look a little nicer. Unfortunately, websites suggest you don't use pictures printed on an inkjet printer because the colors will run. So I scratched that idea and decided to do a ribbon pattern on the bucket instead.
I still have a little ways to go before I consider it finished but you get the gist!

And the inspiration didn't stop there! When I came home from running errands yesterday my eye caught glimpse of a huge spider web! This thing was at least three feet in diameter! Then I saw the spider:
I ran back inside after taking these and googled "big yellow spider" and found out the spider is commonly known as the "Yellow Garden Spider"; who would have thought!

So I jumped the gun in updating yesterday when today is the kittens' 2 week birthday! That little 5 second clip was just too cute to withhold another day! But, today was the first day I had the closet door open and they were really active. Still no flash though, so the pictures are a little blurry, and the video is not professional quality, but I guarantee smiles for all who see!
Here we get up close and personal with a curious little one. In the background the others are getting a little feisty with each other.
And here, the gray kitten on the right looks like he's hatching an escape plan. I didn't get it on camera but the two of them seemed really interested in the world beyond that little corner they've been living in. Big, expressive, blue eyes looking all over the place.
